The first chapter: Invictus Utilities in 2016

May 2016 marks one of the earliest dates in the Invictus story. Invictus Utilities Ltd was formed on 13 May, before the group of specialist businesses visitors know today had taken shape.

May 2016 marks one of the earliest dates in the Invictus story. Invictus Utilities Ltd was formed on 13 May, before the group of specialist businesses visitors know today had taken shape.

A beginning with a different name

The name says something about that early chapter: utilities came first in the company name. It was a starting point for the Invictus story, not a description of everything the group would later become.

As the years went on, the name Invictus appeared across businesses with different specialisms. What began with utilities eventually sat alongside communications, comparison services and other areas of work. Those businesses each have their own history, but this early company remains part of the wider picture.

More than one chapter

Another company, Invictus at Home Ltd, followed later in 2016. The two were separate businesses, and the distinction matters when looking back at how the group developed.

The original Invictus Utilities Ltd closed in 2021. The Invictus story, however, did not end there: by then other businesses had their own place within it.

There is something fitting about looking back at a name that came before so many others. It reminds us that business histories rarely arrive fully formed. They are built through changes, fresh directions and chapters that do not all last forever.

Just a few months after the first Invictus company was formed, another name arrived. On 7 September 2016, Invictus at Home Ltd was incorporated.

It is the name that now welcomes people to the wider group website, but the business was still at an early point in its journey.

A name that stayed

Names matter, particularly when a business changes over time. Invictus at Home became a familiar thread connecting different parts of the group's story. As specialist services developed, it provided a way to bring those connections together without pretending that every business offered the same thing.

For someone finding Invictus today, that distinction is useful. The group can help them discover the right specialist business, while each business remains responsible for explaining its own services and helping its customers.

The next steps

The years following 2016 brought new chapters. In 2017, the Armed Forces Covenant became part of the Invictus story, and telecommunications was also taking a place within it.

Later came comparison services, marketing and stronger connections with community projects. Not everything happened at once, and the group did not stand still.

Looking back, September 2016 is a useful place to start. It gives the familiar name a beginning, while leaving plenty of room for the chapters that followed.

A promise to the Armed Forces community

In June 2017, Invictus at Home signed the Armed Forces Covenant, adding a commitment to the Armed Forces community to its growing story.

Read the milestone

In June 2017, Invictus at Home signed the Armed Forces Covenant, adding a commitment to the Armed Forces community to its growing story.

This was about people rather than products. The Covenant recognises that those who serve, those who have served and their families should not face disadvantage because of their connection with the Armed Forces.

What does the promise mean?

Service life can bring challenges that are easy to miss from the outside. Families may move regularly, and veterans making the transition into civilian life can find themselves navigating unfamiliar situations.

The Armed Forces Covenant asks businesses and organisations to recognise that reality and support fair treatment. Signing it is a commitment to a principle; it is not, by itself, proof that every ambition has already been achieved.

For Invictus, the signing became part of the group's history at a time when the business was finding its direction and developing its place in the wider community.

A commitment that looks beyond business

A company can be measured by what it sells, but that is not the whole story. The people it chooses to support, and the commitments it makes publicly, matter too.

The Covenant signing is one of those moments for Invictus: a clear decision to recognise the Armed Forces community as part of its responsibilities.

You can learn more about the Covenant through the UK Government's Armed Forces Covenant guidance, or explore other chapters in Our History.

Keeping connected: telecoms joins the Invictus story

Think of how often an ordinary day depends on being able to make a call. A missed conversation can delay a delivery, hold up a business decision or leave someone wondering how to get help.

Read the milestone

Think of how often an ordinary day depends on being able to make a call. A missed conversation can delay a delivery, hold up a business decision or leave someone wondering how to get help.

By 2017, telecommunications had become part of the Invictus story. It was a different kind of specialist service, built around something people rely on constantly but rarely think about when it works.

When a connection matters

In those days, many homes and businesses still depended heavily on traditional landlines. A dead line or a patchy connection was not just irritating; it could make everyday tasks surprisingly difficult.

Helping people understand communications services meant talking about real needs, not simply technical specifications. What will work? Who can help when something goes wrong? What is the right starting point?

Telecoms gave Invictus another area in which those questions mattered.

The world has moved on

The way people communicate has changed enormously. Calls increasingly travel over broadband connections, and workplaces rely on a mix of mobile, internet and cloud-based tools.

The technology is different, but the underlying need is familiar: people want to stay in touch and know where to turn when they cannot.

That chapter continues within the group through In Telecoms. It is one part of a much broader story, but one that still feels relevant every time a phone rings or a connection drops.

See where it fits in the Invictus timeline.

No dial tone? A familiar problem from the landline years

You pick up the receiver. You wait for the familiar hum. Nothing.

Read the milestone

You pick up the receiver. You wait for the familiar hum. Nothing.

Anyone who relied on a landline will recognise that sinking feeling. Is it the handset, the socket or the line itself? And who do you call when the phone you need to use has stopped working?

The first checks were often the simplest

At the beginning of 2019, these were exactly the sorts of questions Invictus's telecoms help material addressed. A telephone with no dial tone could have several causes, and the first step was to work out whether the fault was inside the property or somewhere beyond it.

Trying another handset or checking the connection might sound obvious, but straightforward steps could make a confusing problem easier to understand.

That was the value of clear customer guidance: not promising an instant repair, but helping someone make sense of what to check next.

A different world of phone calls

Traditional landlines were once the background to everyday life. Shops took orders over them, businesses arranged appointments and families stayed in touch.

Today, many calls use digital services and internet connections. The familiar handset has not disappeared, but what happens behind the scenes can be quite different.

For Invictus, this small slice of telecoms history is a reminder of an enduring need. Technology changes. People still want a helpful answer when it stops working.

Invictus Inspire: a name that pointed in another direction

Some names become instantly familiar. Others belong to a quieter chapter, when a business is considering what it might do next.

Read the milestone

Some names become instantly familiar. Others belong to a quieter chapter, when a business is considering what it might do next.

Invictus Inspire belongs to that second kind of story. The name was explored around 2019, during a period when Invictus was developing beyond its early beginnings.

Not every direction becomes a business

The name itself suggests a different emphasis from utilities or telecoms. But a name is only the start of an idea. It does not tell us that a public programme launched, that people took part or that a lasting service followed.

Rather than attach achievements to Invictus Inspire that cannot be established, this chapter is best understood as a brief moment of exploration.

And there is nothing unusual about that. Businesses consider new directions all the time. Some become central to what follows; others stay ideas, while attention turns elsewhere.

A story still taking shape

By this point, Invictus had already developed beyond its first company names, and other specialist areas were becoming part of the picture.

Invictus Inspire sits among those changes as a reminder that a growing group does not have a perfectly straight path. Not every idea has to become a launch to have been part of the journey.

You can follow the developments around this period in Our History.

The people who make a community event possible

By the time families arrive at a free festival, much of the hard work has already happened. Stalls have been set out, performers are getting ready and volunteers are answering the same questions for the hundredth time.

Read the milestone

By the time families arrive at a free festival, much of the hard work has already happened. Stalls have been set out, performers are getting ready and volunteers are answering the same questions for the hundredth time.

For Bedworth Party in the Park, all of that helps turn an ordinary recreation ground into a place for people to spend a day together.

More than what happens on stage

The event brings together local performers, food and craft traders, charities and families. There are opportunities to enjoy entertainment, discover community groups and spend time outdoors without paying an admission fee.

Behind that experience is a team of organisers and volunteers. During the 2026 event, around 180 volunteer hours were recorded, alongside a further 50 hours from the organiser. Those figures give a glimpse of the time contributed to keeping the event free.

Why it belongs in the Invictus story

Invictus has roots in Warwickshire, and its community connections include Bedworth Party in the Park. That does not mean every part of the festival is an Invictus achievement. The event is made possible by many people and organisations, each contributing in different ways.

What matters is the connection: businesses exist in communities, not apart from them, and local events are shaped by the people willing to help.

The Community & Projects section explores this side of Invictus, while Our History puts it alongside the group's business chapters.
